A strong and dedicated team is an absolute necessity for any successful and sustainable group that is looking for an investment for the long hall. But Building a Dream Team is not an effortless task and it simply won’t happen organically. The principles in discovering how to cultivate a team that not only stays, but thrives and makes a genuine difference is one worthy of discovering. The pursuit to assemble a group of individuals who are committed, empowered, and effective is worth the effort and no doubt bring about extraordinary results. 

In the process of creating a team that will last the test of time and leaves a lasting impact requires staunch intentionality. Let’s explore some principles of creating lasting teams of individuals who not only want to stay but are driven to make a meaningful difference.

1. Right People in the Right Place

One of the foundational elements of effective team building is ensuring you have the right people in the right roles. Jim Collins’ “Good to Great” book emphasizes the pivotal concept of getting the right people on the right seat in the bus, expressing the idea that for an organization to achieve exceptional success, must have the right individuals in the appropriate roles. This involves a thorough understanding of your team members’ strengths, skills, and potential.

When in doubt, don’t hire – keep looking. Have the discipline to say no, the patience to wait for the right people, and the insight to know that it is more important to get the right people on the bus than to put the wrong people in the right seats.

Assess who you have and identify the gaps. Place individuals where they can shine and grow, nurturing their talents and aspirations. By fostering an environment that aligns with their potential, you create a space where they are more likely to stay and contribute significantly.

Establishing solid team development involves active listening, valuing diverse opinions, and refraining from guilting or humiliating team members into compliance. Instead, focus on helping each member grow their reputation and standing.

This includes recognizing when breaks are needed and not consistently assigning challenging tasks to the same individuals. Prioritizing their health fosters a sense of care and commitment, making them more likely to stay engaged and motivated.

Feeling valued and appreciated is a basic human need.

To create a team that stays and excels, ensure that they have the resources, materials, budgets, and communication needed for success. People are more likely to quit when they feel they’re not effective or lack the means to find solutions. By providing everything necessary for their roles, you empower them to produce their best work and feel confident in their contributions.

6. Continuous Evaluation and Adaptation

The dynamics of teams and individuals evolve over time. Regularly assess the fit, influence, and needs within your team.
